What sort of activities will you experience at the Improvisation Academy? In the activity on this video, you can see how a group gets to practice fluent teamwork.
It’s a seemingly simple task. Seven of the class participants take to the floor, and at any given moment a certain number will be moving while the others remain still
All the participants get to practice responding quickly in the moment to a fast-changing environment. And yet the activity manages to simulate a complex and demanding situation in a very safe way. Your only risk is realising that some members of the group are moving when they could better be still – and vice versa.
That provokes enough tension to generate a round of laughter when things go slightly wrong.
You can also see how people are communicating with each other through a range of signals – some more subtle than others - indicating that they want someone to stop or to go.
Like many of our activities, it last for only a few minutes – and then there’s a chance to watch another group have a go, to see what can be learned from observing as well as being in the thick of it.
